Scaling & polishing

Ultrasonic scaling + polish. Every six months is ideal.

What this involves

Ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar and calculus, followed by a polish to leave the surface smooth. Most patients should have this done every six months; smokers and patients with periodontal history every three to four. We do not use the "air-flow" water-jet scaling as a default because for most patients it is cosmetic and adds cost — if you specifically want it, we can.

Aftercare
After a scaling

Your gums may feel slightly tender and bleed a little for 1–2 days after scaling, especially if this is your first scaling in a long time. Brush gently and continue normally.

Some temperature sensitivity on newly-cleaned tooth surfaces is common for a few days. A sensitivity toothpaste (Sensodyne Rapid Relief, Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief) helps significantly.

Resume flossing / interdental brushing — tartar will build back fastest if you stop. Daily flossing is the single most effective thing you can do between scalings.

Contact us if:
  • Bleeding that lasts more than 3 days
  • Persistent severe sensitivity lasting more than 2 weeks
